It’s the least expensive EV vehicle on the market today. The Chevy Bolt offers two models in the EUV line, the standard and Premiere models in the EUV model.

 2023 Chevy Bolt Review    

 The 2023 Chevy Bolt is easy to love. The price is right, the range is decent, and it’s loaded with features. But it’s essential to be fully informed when purchasing a Bolt EUV. Let’s look at the pros and cons of the Chevy Bolt EUV. 

 Pros 

• 259-mile range — This is an average range for an EUV, though more than others at this price point.
• Affordable price — This car is incredibly affordable at under $35,000 for the Premiere trim. 
• Well-loaded with standard safety features — The Chevy Safety Assist package comes standard on the Bolt EUV. 
• Technology — This vehicle is technology-friendly with Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, push-button engine start, and more. 

 Cons 

• Not available in all-wheel drive — This vehicle is available in front-wheel drive only. 
• Small cargo space — The cargo space is okay for picking up groceries, but if multiple people are traveling, it may be challenging to fit everyone’s suitcase. 
• Poor USB Media port placement — The USB media ports are hidden within the center console and aren’t easily accessible. 
• Commonplace style and performance — It’s a great vehicle, though there isn’t anything spectacular about its looks. The performance is peppy, though many modern-day vehicles have a peppier engine than past models. 

The price is the biggest difference between the 2023 model and the years prior. The price dropped nearly $6,000 over the 2022 model, and, unlike the 2022, the 2023 may be eligible for the up to $7,000 tax credit offered by the government (with income restrictions). In addition, the 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV offers a Redline package for 2023 that includes a glossy black exterior trim, unique wheels, and a red stripe. The Redline package is available on either trim of the Bolt. 

How It Compares To Other EVs 

Compared to other EVs, the Bolt EUV is short on price but big on features. It offers many of the same features as its more expensive counterparts (such as the Nissan Leaf starting at $27,400, the Hyundai Kona Electric at $31,000, and the Kia Niro EV at approximately $40k) at a better overall price point. 

The 2023 Bolt EUV will give you approximately 258 miles on a fully charged battery; the Leaf provides considerably less at 149 miles of range. The Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV will give you similar mileage but at a higher cost.  

While the time to charge on the Bolt EUV is on par with the much more expensive Kia Niro at 7.5 hours, it is much less than the similarly priced Hyundai Kona Electric, which needs 9.5 hours to get to a full charge. The 2023 Chevy Bolt also offers a dual-level charge cord to charge your vehicle with a 120 or 240 plug. With the Premiere trim, Chevrolet’s Super Cruise is an option that offers hands-free driving on certain highways.  

Performance        

You can expect the Chevy Bolt EUV to go from 0 to 60 in approximately 7 seconds. Getting up to freeway speeds isn’t a problem in this vehicle. Braking is not harsh, and with a one-pedal drive mode, it takes care of your daily slowing with regenerative braking. When regenerative braking is used regularly, it can help the Bolt EUV’s battery range.  

The Standard and Premiere versions of the 2023 Bolt EUV offer an electric motor that gets power from a lithium-ion battery. It also provides the following: 

• Permanent magnet electric motor
• 65kWh lithium-ion battery 
• 200 horsepower 
• 266 lb-ft of torque (front-wheel drive) 

The maximum range for either trim is 247 miles. Charging the vehicle takes 10 hours with a 240-volt plug to get a full charge. A 120-volt plug will give you four miles of range for each hour the vehicle is plugged in. The Chevy Bolt EUV will also connect to a DC fast charger that will provide 95 miles of range to your battery for every hour it is plugged in. The DC fast charging rate maxes out at 55kW, which is slower than other EV vehicles. For comparison, the Kia Niro’s DC fast charging rate maxes out at 85kW, giving you a charge much faster, though the price matches the higher charging rate.  

The inside of the vehicle is suitable for storing small items but won’t carry anything significant, while the front seat pockets, center console, and glove box offer adequate storage space. The vehicle provides a plus-size phone cubby for your larger phone and an open space for a handbag or something similar under the center console.  

The trunk offers 16.3 cubic feet, enough to handle most of your groceries, though smaller than other EVs. The trunk space offers a drop floor that can be repositioned to hold slightly larger items. The rear seats offer a 60/40 split allowing you to drop one or both of the rear seats to give you up to 56.9 cubic feet of carrying capacity.  

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV offers excellent fuel economy. You get 125 miles to the “gallon” for city driving and 104 miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe) for highway driving. The EPA has rated this vehicle with a combined MPGe of 115 miles. 

Handling and Ride Quality 

The Bolt EUV has a lot of pep, making it fun to drive. While the suspension feels a bit bumpy on rough pavement, the vehicle accelerates smoothly and quickly. The car also has a low center of gravity, so it hugs the road closely. While not the cushiest vehicle on the block, the ride is comfortable.  

The vehicle offers sport mode, which improves the steering wheel’s sensitivity and throttle response, though this mode drains the battery more quickly. Using the Regen On Demand feature, you can incrementally recharge your battery as you go. The Regen On Demand feature is activated with a paddle on the left side of the steering wheel. This feature slows the vehicle while incrementally recharging the battery. 

Comfort   

The six-way manually adjustable cloth front seats and the six extra inches of legroom in the back make the 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV a comfortable vehicle to sit in. The rear seat offers 60/40 folding seats for extra cargo space when you need it. The flat-bottomed steering wheel makes it easy for the driver to get in and out of the vehicle. The generously telescoping steering wheel makes it easy for the driver to get it in just the right position.  

The rear seat sits a bit higher, so adults climbing into the back may need to duck to enter the vehicle. Anyone over 6 feet tall may find the headroom a bit of a tight squeeze. 

The eight-inch driver instrument panel makes it easy to see the information the driver wants, such as the battery information, driver efficiency, and power output. It is easily configurable. It can also show you eco-coaching to help you ensure you are getting the most from your battery. Available cameras provide a 360-degree view of the entire vehicle.  

A 10.2-inch infotainment display provides easily readable entertainment information. The Bolt EUV also offers the convenience of wireless smartphone connectivity through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It also offers both USB and USB-c ports for front passengers. The rear passengers also have their own USB ports. 

The vehicle connects to the driver via a smartphone app that helps the driver keep track of battery availability and helps them find a charging station when needed.  

The Premiere trim has an option for the Chevy Super Cruise package, which can turn the vehicle into a self-driving car on certain highways. The Super Cruise package includes lane centering, which helps your vehicle stay in its lane. It also works with your adaptive cruise control. You can even change lanes without ever touching the steering wheel. Just turn on your turn signal, and the vehicle will do the rest. 

Pricing     

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV comes in two trims, LT and Premiere. Many great features come standard on both trims. The LT has an MSRP of $28,800, whereas the Premiere edition is $33,295. The Redline package is available for either trim. The Premiere edition offers a few more standard features and provides the Super Cruise option, whereas the LT trim does not. 

The Nissan Leaf is comparable in price at $28,000, though the Chevy Bolt EUV provides a much longer range at 247 compared to 149 for the Leaf. The Hyundai Kona Electric is higher at $33,500, and though it offers a similar battery range, it does not offer a self-driving feature. The Kia Niro tops the list in terms of expense at $40,875 MSRP. It offers a similar battery charging time at a considerably higher cost.         

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The battery range on the Bolt EUV is comparable to many other EVs. It’s better than some (such as the Nissan Leaf) but not quite as good as others (Tesla Model 3 offers a 272 range, while other vehicles in this line offer an even better range of over 300 miles.) The time to charge is also comparable to other models at 7.5 hours for a full charge.  

Factory Options 

The LT model of the Bolt EUV provides a driver confidence package that includes blind-spot mirroring and cross-traffic alerts. It also comes with rear parking sensors. The comfort package is also included, which comes with heated seats and steering wheel, and an eight-way power driver’s seat. The Convenience package includes heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating, and a self-dimming rearview mirror. 

The battery has a lifetime warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles, so it is expected to go the distance.  

Interior and technology    

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV is technology and entertainment ready, with both USB and USB-c charging ports and a 10.1-inch infotainment display. The infotainment display is intuitive and easy to use, and the volume/power buttons are easily within the driver’s reach.  

 The vehicle offers a host of connectivity features. It works with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa and has a wi-fi hotspot.  

 The standard interior includes cloth seats, though, with the Convenience package, you can upgrade to leather. The vehicle is designed to hold up to 5 people comfortably. The driver’s seat is fully adjustable and comfortable. The Chevy Bolt EUV offers more legroom to rear passengers than the standard Chevy Bolt EV. The legroom for rear passengers is comparable to that of a mid-size sedan.  

Exterior    

 The vehicle’s exterior is available in various colors, from black to white, to two different shades of blue and even red. The EUV also comes with standard roof rails. With the Redline package, the wheels get upgraded, a glossy black trim is added, and a beautiful red stripe.

 The capacity of the 2023 Chevy Bolt is a maximum of 5 people. The dimensions of the vehicle are:

Warranty  

The Bolt EUV has a basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles, while the battery warranty expands to 8 years or 100,000 miles. 

Infotainments System       

The 10.1-inch infotainment system provides a large screen that is easy to interact with. It is intuitive and easy to use. The screen features a taskbar that has home and function buttons.  

The climate controls are integrated into the infotainment system and are easily reachable below the screen.  

The power and volume buttons are on the left, making it easy for the driver to control (though they also have controls on the steering wheel). The system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It will also work with Amazon Alexa, Audiobooks, Spotify, Pandora, and more when connected to a smartphone. A smartphone can be wirelessly connected to the system. 

Towing and Storage          

The 2023 Chevy Bolt will tow up to 2,000 pounds. This is enough to pull along a small boat or trailer. The maximum storage on the vehicle is 56.9 cubic feet when the rear seats are lowered. With the rear seats in place, the storage capacity is 16.3 cubic feet. This is enough to handle your weekly grocery run generally. 

Fuel economy      

The EPA for fuel economy rates the Bolt EUV at 125 miles for the city and 104 miles for highway driving. The combined MPGe for this vehicle is 115 miles. MPGe is the EPA’s way of measuring alternative-fuel vehicles, including electric. It is measured by how far a car will travel on 33.7 kWh of electricity. 33.7 kWh is equivalent to one gallon of gas. 

Value        

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV offers a strong value buy when you consider the price and the potential of up to $7,500 off, thanks to the tax credit. The interior has been upgraded compared to the previous model and has a more modern, sleek design.  

The warranties for this vehicle are comparable to its competitors, with a basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles. The Bolt EUV also includes roadside assistance for up to 60,000 miles and free maintenance for the first 24,000 miles, which is decent.  

While other vehicles out there may come close in price, the Chevy Bolt may give you more range for your buck. The Nissan Leaf is similarly priced but offers a much shorter range than the Bolt. Other vehicles offer a similar range but a much higher price than this one. 

Unique Features 

One of the standout features of the Chevy Bolt is the dual-level charge cord. This allows you to charge the vehicle on either a 120- or 240-volt charging source.  

Another unique feature is the option for the Super Cruise package on the Premiere trim. This package turns the vehicle into a self-driving car on certain highways, making the drive less stressful for the driver. 

Chevy Bolt Models             

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV comes in two trims, the standard LT trim and the Premiere model. In terms of safety features, both trims come with the same features. These two models start to differ in the seating options (cloth for the LT vs. leather for the Premiere) and the available driving package. The Premiere has the option of adaptive cruise control as well as the option for the self-driving feature, Super Cruise. 

Safety       

With a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicle is one for the family. The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV ranked five stars on the frontal and side crash tests and four stars on their rollover test.  

The Bolt EUV offers many safety features. All of the standards are there, such as front and side airbags, stability control, and daytime running lights. The Chevy Bolt EUV also includes lane keep assist and lane departure warnings to help you know if you are drifting out of your lane. You also get automated braking with pedestrian detection. Cruise control is another safety feature, and adaptive cruise control is available with the Premiere model. Both trims come with automatic high beams and a following distance indicator.  

Chevy Bolt vs. the Competition       

When purchasing an electric vehicle, there are many options. Ensuring that you get the right car is a major decision. Let’s consider how the 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV stacks up against the competition. 

Nissan Leaf: The Nissan Leaf offers a comparable price point to the Chevy Bolt EUV, with a comparable MPGe and warranties. It provides a lot of the same features as the Bolt. Where there is a difference is in the range of the battery. While the Bolt EUV offers a range of 258 miles, the Leaf only gives you 119 miles of range. It’s okay for driving around town, but it wouldn’t get you very far on a road trip. 

Hyundai Kona Electric: The Hyundai Kona Electric is slightly higher in price than the Bolt EUV. There are some reasons for this, though. The basic warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles compared to the Bolt’s 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, and the battery warranty is for ten years compared to the Bolt’s eight. The Kona takes longer to fully charge the battery at 9.5 hours on a 240-volt charger than Bolt’s 7.5 hours. Most of the safety features are the same between the two vehicles.  

Kia Niro EV: The Kia Niro comes in as the most expensive vehicle we considered here at an MSRP of $39,550. Like the Kona, the Niro offers a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty compared to the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty of the Bolt. The battery warranty is also ten years for this vehicle. The time to charge is comparable to the Bolt at 7.5 hours on a 240-volt charger. Again, the safety features are similar between this vehicle and the Bolt.
